Product Packaging Design: Why FSSAI Compliance Isn't Optional

For any food, cosmetic, or FMCG product sold in India, packaging design and regulatory compliance aren't two separate steps — they have to happen together, or the design gets reworked after the fact at real cost.

FSSAI details aren't a footnote — they dictate layout

License number, nutritional information, ingredient list, and mandatory warnings take up real space and have minimum font-size requirements — a design that treats compliance text as an afterthought usually has to be redone once legal review catches the gaps.

Barcode placement and quality affect retail acceptance, not just legality

A barcode that's too small, too close to a fold line, or printed with insufficient contrast can fail to scan at a retail checkout — some retail chains and marketplaces will reject listings over this before a customer ever sees the product.

Good design and compliance aren't in tension — treat them as one brief

The strongest packaging design happens when regulatory requirements are given to the designer upfront, as constraints to design around, not corrections to bolt on afterward. This produces packaging that looks intentional rather than "designed, then patched."

Marketplace listings have their own image and format rules on top of FSSAI

Amazon, Flipkart, and Blinkit each have separate packaging-photo and labeling requirements for listing approval, distinct from statutory compliance — plan for both if the product is going to sell across marketplaces and physical retail simultaneously.
